Halloween 2010 ran in the U.S., the long-awaited series, The Walking Dead 'to, produced by AMC and first six episodes created. The pilot was directed by Frank Darabont, who also is producer of the series, and the success of the first season was overwhelming. We spoke with Frank G. zombie specialist brain about the series.
can you tell us something about the comic, which has underpinned the series?
The series is based on the eponymous comic book series by Robert Kirkman, who is also very successful, it is now one of the hundredth episode. Now were even the first volumes reprinted. As a concept, the comic was the beginning of a zombie series, which should preferably run continuously, without a title the rolling of credits should pull out of the event. So far they have managed this quite well.
You have to talk to the TV series and briefly about the comic, because without the success of zombies and the comic in detail, would not the TV series, especially with the effort have been possible. Kirkman is not much of a newcomer in the field of zombies, as author, he has already created the Marvel Zombies: they are there to over-zombies that are no longer save the world eat, but. This is the best what has been come to me in recent years about zombies. For one that's extremely funny, it also offers a truly new aspect to the issue, as the Marvel Zombies are the stars of the series. Zombies are so often something of a natural disaster, ie, they are the trigger for the whole horror, but not the protagonists, partly because they can not talk. The Marvel Zombies, so Hulk, Superman and Co reflect on their situation but the whole time. They are torn between their desire to eat, people and their traditional task of saving the world. "The Walking Dead", however, is quite ironic free and offers virtually no innovation in terms of the zombie theme. Well but made no surprises.
And what do you think of the TV series?
The first season focuses already on the first episodes of the comic, but also scatters some variations, which I liked. Also, that the series was produced very complicated, is not bad, but ultimately it has the same problem as the comic book: it lacks the particular, as the Zombies are used. That's why I'm exited after the fourth episode, you're so happy with everything that you need not look at themselves. The problem is that the concept is not a standard concept. In the comic, it does not matter, but in a series but I need different characters, which contribute independently to enrich the history and various aspects of them. With the Sopranos Tony is indeed the boss, but always assume his wife, children or relatives of the action. Or "The Wire" as the protagonist disappears in Season 3 and 4 almost completely the opposite pole moves to the cops in the first three seasons completely. Even a mediocre series like "True Blood " makes the front very nice, HBO has perfected.
If I only have a main character like Dexter, you must at least be created very complex, and Dexter is there already a multiple personality. In "The Walking Dead" I do not see it though. Although they strive to construct parallel actions, but ultimately we have only the body of the Dead and the group. And single individuals of the group are all clichés: the good and the nasty man, the faithful wife and the cool, children, elderly with life experience that younger people who are particularly clever. This is also one of the main problems of the comic. And, there are at least now and then ugly and unwashed in the series, the young women who are not bound, as always peeled from the egg, perfectly coiffed and such.
And what about zombies? What are the in "The Walking Dead"?
They look great, especially from. The zombie make-up is quite large. I also like how they move, the slow, wait-and shuffling around.
There are at last again slow zombies?
No, not really. If they see a human, then they are already fast and run up to him. But not faster than during his lifetime. It is people like you and I do not like Ben Johnson's "28 Days Later". They also remember the zombies from the first Romero, Night of the Living Dead ", as some may also use tools. The zombies are not quite as blunt as usual
An interesting variation also ...
Yes, it is. Pity is that not happened. One can now seems to make no more zombie movies, which takes itself as seriously as "The Walking Dead" and offers so little on the metaphorical level. The last Romeros are ironic reflections about the fact that the zombies are really the livable community. And then there is indeed still the subject of the mirror, that in the blind compared to detect and is also why the death attracted again and again. Even such a boring and less interesting film like "battering ram" is indeed the interesting aspect is that you can delay the zombie virus with sedatives and therefore extend the moment of transformation significantly. In "The Walking Dead" is so far the only attraction, the mixture between the places where many zombies show up and still others completely empty seats. That's especially Atlanta also made really nice. The empty streets and then one turns the corner and there they all are - very impressive and from a bird's eye view ...
What do you think, how successful is the TV series have?
First, it is certainly still good. There is the successful presentation and the extreme expense of the first episode. This could even for a few seasons rich. However, one must also see that the first season consisted of only six episodes, and I think the potential is exhausted quickly. I think, see you there soon enough, because simply there is too little variety, you would have very quickly deviate greatly from the comic.
Perhaps more to the short opening credits of the series, which is almost symptomatic of the problem of series : Aesthetic is indeed very appealing, there are recordings from the first episodes, The filters were alienated, and the credits are fit very nicely in the pictures. The whole thing goes too fast, could build itself as atmospheric as the what. And then there is no good song, not even a catchy melody. Often you can not watch it. Beautiful pictures, but no groove. Like the zombies that can not dance. A good zombie movie should the notice not one but.
